Dr. Drew K. McPhail

Author | Chiropractic Physician | Neuropathy & Degenerative Conditions Specialist

Dr. Drew K. McPhail is a chiropractic physician, author, consultant, and clinical innovator with more than two decades of experience helping patients suffering from chronic pain, neuropathy, degenerative spinal conditions, and progressive loss of function.

A graduate of Parker College of Chiropractic, Dr. McPhail has spent his career focused on understanding why patients decline, why symptoms often appear late in the disease process, and why traditional symptom-based approaches frequently fail to address the underlying drivers of nerve degeneration.

Early in practice, Dr. McPhail focused heavily on structural correction, spinal alignment, postural restoration, scoliosis correction, and non-surgical approaches to chronic musculoskeletal pain. Over time, his clinical focus expanded as he began seeing more patients with numbness, tingling, burning, balance problems, loss of sensation, and progressive neuropathic symptoms—many of whom had been told there was little that could be done beyond medication and monitoring.

That experience led him to develop a broader clinical framework for neuropathy—one that looks beyond symptoms and focuses on circulation, cellular health, structural nerve stress, and neurological activation. His work emphasizes the role of impaired blood flow, ischemia, microvascular dysfunction, mitochondrial decline, nerve compression, metabolic disease, toxicity, and chronic degeneration in the progression of peripheral neuropathy.

Dr. McPhail has pursued advanced postgraduate education through respected organizations and instructors in neurology, spinal biomechanics, soft tissue injury, scoliosis correction, and functional neurological rehabilitation. His clinical background includes training and study with organizations such as the Spine Research Institute of San Diego, the Carrick Institute, the American Functional Neurology Institute, the CLEAR Institute, and Pettibon-based structural correction systems.

He is the author of Neuropathy: The Epidemic, a patient-centered book written to help people understand neuropathy as more than a collection of symptoms. The book explains the hidden progression of neuropathy, the connection between nerve damage and circulation, the danger of late detection, and the importance of objective evaluation before ulcers, disability, and loss of function occur.

Dr. McPhail is also the founder of NeuroFlux Technologies Incorporated, an innovative company focused on developing cutting-edge diagnostics and therapeutics for chronic degenerative conditions, neuropathy, and neurological dysfunction. His work centers around advancing early detection strategies, objective evaluation methods, and technology-driven approaches designed to improve outcomes and redefine the future of preventative healthcare.

In addition to patient education and technology development, Dr. McPhail consults with clinics and healthcare providers on neuropathy care models, clinical implementation, patient communication, examination systems, and practice growth. His N.E.U.R.O. System™ training framework is designed to help clinicians better understand neuropathy, improve examinations, communicate findings clearly, and implement more effective systems for patient care.

Dr. McPhail’s mission is simple: to change the way neuropathy is understood, detected, and treated. He believes neuropathy should not be viewed as an inevitable decline, but as a progressive process that can be evaluated earlier, addressed more intelligently, and managed with a deeper understanding of the systems that support nerve health.

QUICK FACTS

40+ million Americans are estimated to live with peripheral neuropathy.

More than half of those affected may not know the underlying cause of their nerve damage.

Peripheral neuropathy is one of the leading causes of:

  • Chronic pain

  • Numbness

  • Balance impairment

  • Falls

  • Foot ulcers

  • Lower-limb amputations

WHY IT MATTERS

Peripheral neuropathy affects the nerves that carry sensation, movement, and autonomic function throughout the body.

Common symptoms include:

  • Burning pain

  • Tingling

  • Numbness

  • Weakness

  • Loss of balance

  • Reduced sensation in the feet and hands

Because symptoms often develop gradually, many individuals are not diagnosed until significant nerve damage has already occurred.

WHO IS AT RISK?

Peripheral neuropathy may develop from many different causes, including:

  • Diabetes and prediabetes

  • Mechanical nerve compression

  • Chemotherapy

  • Certain medications

  • Vitamin deficiencies

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Alcohol misuse

  • Toxic exposures

  • Infections

  • Age-related degeneration

THE COST TO SOCIETY

Peripheral neuropathy contributes to:

  • Increased emergency room visits from falls

  • Higher hospitalization rates

  • Reduced independence

  • Chronic pain and disability

  • Diabetic foot ulcers

  • Lower-extremity amputations

  • Billions of dollars in annual healthcare expenditures and lost productivity

WHY EARLY DETECTION IS IMPORTANT

Early recognition may help identify problems before irreversible complications occur.

Evaluation can include:

  • Neurological examination

  • Balance assessment

  • Sensory testing

  • Vascular assessment

  • Temperature monitoring

  • Functional evaluation

Earlier intervention may reduce the risk of falls, ulceration, and progressive disability.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

Myth: Neuropathy is simply a normal part of aging.

Fact: Nerve damage is not considered an inevitable consequence of aging and warrants evaluation.

Myth: Numbness is harmless if it does not hurt.

Fact: Loss of protective sensation can increase the risk of unnoticed injuries, ulcers, infection, and falls.

Myth: Neuropathy only affects people with diabetes.

Fact: Diabetes is one important cause, but many other medical and mechanical conditions can also lead to peripheral neuropathy.

KEY TALKING POINTS

  • Peripheral neuropathy is a major public health challenge.

  • Symptoms often appear late in the disease process.

  • Loss of sensation can be more dangerous than pain.

  • Earlier recognition creates opportunities to reduce complications.

  • Education and awareness remain essential for improving outcomes.
